Director Matthew Warchus continually surprises with lovely visuals and off-kilter approaches that add to the enjoyment. Tom Minchin's catchy songs are made even more clever with Ellen Kane's lively, inventive choreography. Her character alone is devilishly evil and her musical numbers are wickedly funny. Alisha Weir plays the title role with aplomb, but it's Emma Thompson, as the evil headmistress, who steals the show. From the enchanting opening baby sequence, it's obvious that we're in for some ingenious entertainment. Based on his book about a young girl with special talents, this musical goes full force.
